Book review of Doctor’s kitchen 3-2-1

Doctor’s kitchen 3-2-1 by Dr. Rupy Aujla

Food and lifestyle go hand in hand. This is a hard reality but that is what it is. Most of us tend to ignore or take proper care of what we eat. The food that we eat is what fuels our body, so we should be careful in knowing what goes inside.

It shouldn’t be destroying the body in the process of consumption.

On the contrary, stopping to consume as part of a diet plan is not going to be of any help at all.

A good diet and a great workout routine go hand in hand to make you achieve a strong and toned physique. If you do not pay much attention to what goes into your body, it is going to show up in your physique and metabolism. Foods rich in sodium, sugar, and fats can help you curb hunger pangs, make you eat more than what is required making your body pile up the pounds but in the long run, will also be the reason for you to succumb to chronic illness. This is the main reason that you should be aware of what your food is made of before it goes inside your body. So a balanced diet that has carbs, proteins, fibers, and vitamins is the right choice.

Plan and cook your meals I’m in advance so that you don’t run hastily at the last minute. Most importantly this would help you in avoiding reaching out to unhealthy food options such as ready to eat, sugar, and sodium loaded foods. Choose a meal plan that suits your body type and one that would help you in reaching your goal.

Rupy Aujla is a medical doctor, home cook, and a portion of food as a medical advocate. That brings us to another point that the food we consume not only plays the part of fuel but also helps in healing conditions and ailments in the notion that food is medicine.

In his recent book, the author brings about a concept 3-2-1.

What is 3-2-1?

A three-part meal with fruits and vegetables for two people cooked in one pan. In this formula or way of cooking the author promises a change in life. The formula aims at ensuring health benefits to optimize healthy living and to streamline the process of cooking. As someone who wants to be fit and healthy by not slogging in the kitchen to cook meals that claim to help in losing pounds, I think this would definitely be a game-changer in cookbooks.

As a working mother of two and also a conscious member of the family who wishes to provide healthy meals to her family, the book does seem to be a quick go-to for me to cook a no-fuss recipe that would yield multiple health benefits. And what took me in awe is the one pan mention which also saves me from the horrendous task of the sink piling up with vessels to be washed. Isn’t this something that all we ladies wish for?

A daily dose of fresh produce, good quality fat, grains, and fibers is what a balanced meal needs to be comprised of and I think the 3-2-1 could be the best way to get this done right. The food that we eat can change the way we think, help in making our mood better, build or boost immunity levels and reduce infection.

When you say you eat well it not only means that you remove unhealthy stuff it is also about taking in foods that help to safeguard yourself from ailments. There is so much to understand between the communications that happen between what you see on your plate and the inner ecosystem. By ecosystem, it means the body that accepts whatever we eat and provides us the necessary energy needed to toil. We also need to understand that in reality we as people find it difficult to continue eating healthily. There is a roadblock somewhere in the form of work, stress, or time that hinders the habit of eating healthy meals in the longer run. Keeping this in mind is what the author promises that his 3-2-1 strategy can help us, in the long run, to eat healthy meals and cultivate an inner chef.

Eat the colours

The author talks about the colors in foods that need to be taken and their health benefits.

Red foods help in relaxing blood vessels and blood pressure.

Green foods help in brain and heart functioning. Green foods that are termed cruciferous have anti-cancer compounds. Green foods like broccoli help in the detoxification of the body.

Yellow and oranges foods are sources of vitamin C and beta carotenes they help in boosting immunity, load the system with anti-oxidants, and also lowering inflammation.

So the next time when we come across the term eat the rainbow or rainbow plate, we must remember it means food that covers all nutritional needs of the body.

The author also provides a lot of recipes ranging from salads, oats, curries, soups, stir-fries that would be in the formulation of 3-2-1 helping us achieve the goal of healthy living. A 100 recipes that guarantee to eat healthily and leading a better lifestyle. So always keep in mind that food is medicine and food is fuel.

What I like about the recipes are that you also get to swap the ingredients with variants that would suit us, By this, I mean a healthy swap or swapping due to non-availability.

Health is something that we need to practice daily and the meal that we consume is what would guide us through this journey of leading a healthy lifestyle. So make sure you make the meal preparation minimal and maximize the utilization of what goes inside us.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO HAVE A STRONGER AND TONED PHYSIQUE

Being thin like a chopstick or appearing and being a size zero is no longer the ideal achievement that every woman yearns for. A strong and toned physique is the need of the hour and something that would keep you going. Wonder why? Because when you have a stronger and toned physique you appear to be more confident and powerful.

Being a strong and independent woman can give you the power and confidence to achieve anything. Given any situation, you would be able to handle that with ease. What also comes with having a toned physique is that you’d look great in whatever you choose to wear. Isn’t that a double bonanza?

But does getting a stronger and toned physique to be achieved overnight? Remember ‘ Rome was not built in a day’. It takes patience, strategy, willingness to adapt to make it happen.
Also, keep in mind that the gym is not the only way or the only solution that would yield you a toned physique.

Here are a few tips which could help you on this journey.

1) Goal setting
A journey needs a plan to make it happen. Not knowing the destination and route will leave you being lost. So get your goals set on what you want to achieve. If you are on the higher side or obese make sure you focus on losing weight and toning down your body. On the other hand, if you are thin your focus should be on gaining enough weight and muscle building. All this should be done the right way at a consistent pace. Doing it in haste or opting for plans that guarantee quick results will land your body in trouble if not now somewhere in the future too. So make sure you decide to do it the right way by making a conscious choice. So your workout routine and the diet or meal plan that you follow makes you remain focused throughout the journey and setting goals is the first and foremost step that rewards you.

2) Charting out the right meal
Food that we consume is something that helps to fuel our bodies. It shouldn’t be destroying the body in the process of consumption.
On the contrary, stopping to consume as part of a diet plan is not going to be of any help at all. Remember food is fuel.
Plan and cook your meals I’m advance so that you don’t run hastily at the last minute. Most importantly this would help you in avoiding yourself from reaching out to unhealthy food options such as ready to eat, sugar, and sodium loaded foods. Choose a meal plan that suits your body type and one that would help you in reaching your goal.

3) Workout routine
A great workout routine sets the crux on your journey. Eating right and working out with a proper routine helps you in achieving the goal the right way. Chart out a consistent routine, which will help you keep the momentum of making you reach the goal. If you do not have a routine set you will probably lose track and interest in moving ahead in the journey. So always remember consistency is the key.
If you cannot set a routine on your own, you could ask the gym instructor to help you out with a routine that will make you stay on track and push you further.

4) Keep clean
Sweating is probably going to happen when you start working out. So make sure that you keep yourself clean and well hydrated. This will help flush out toxins the right way.
Be it home or gym always takes a shower post working out. It would help you cool down and also relax the muscles.
With us being in the middle of the pandemic, it is important to maintain social distancing, washing hands frequently, and always carry a face mask and hand sanitizer.

5) Choosing the right Gym gear
Nothing gives you much pleasure than seeing how well you fit into gym gear. The more you work out it’s going to make it even better. Choosing fashionable and functional gym gear is a must. With numerous clothing lines in this gym gear business, you sure do have a big ocean of choices.

6) Weight lifting is not something to be afraid of
Lifting weights is not to gain weight and appear to be bulging. This is a notion that needs much clarity. Lifting weights makes you athletic and makes you appear toned. This way of packing muscles also helps in bringing down the risk of osteoporosis. This muscle build-up will help in supporting your spine thereby yielding a benefit in lifting weights. So make sure that you include lifting weights into your workout routine.

7) stay sober
Alcohol is going to make you gain and pile up empty calories, disrupt sleep cycles, and increase cortisol production that’s going to cause stress. Drinking alcohol during this journey would lead to a derailment. Save your drinks only for special occasions. Your Friday and Saturday nights can wait but not before your journey to attain the toned physique.

Women often tend to gain more weight on the lower body. Your butt, thigh needs to be toned to not make you look like a money bag.

So how do you achieve a firmer butt or lift it to make it appear toned?

Once you achieve your goal, make sure that you remain consistent to maintain the health and continue to train and this will in turn become your lifestyle.

Women could be seen as resorting to taking treatments to make them appear young and fit.
Treatments for toning, enhancement, reduction have been doing rounds lately. The bum, breasts, and hips are where women put on a lot of weight. Toning them, enhancing them are the bodily changes people often take.

Review of New borns and new moms #myfriendalexa

New borns and new moms

BLURB:

As soon as a baby is born, a woman’s life is engulfed by inevitable chaos. Newborns and New Moms dispels the confusion new mothers in urban India often go through.

Drawing from her own experience as a mother and her years as an accomplished and empathetic family physician, Dr Farah Adam Mukadam offers valuable tips and advice tailored for Indian parents through a book that:

Prepares a mother for her new life once the baby comes home
Validates Indian traditions surrounding childcare from a scientific and modern perspective
Provides insights about what to expect from family members and how to handle complex domestic circumstances after childbirth
Covers pertinent topics like mastering breastfeeding, accepting your changed body, postpartum mental and sexual well-being and readjusting to work after maternity leave
Contains useful tips for expecting couples in the age of Covid-19
Packed with wisdom and strengthened by real-life examples, this accessible how-to is the inspiration you need to embrace and enjoy motherhood.

MY REVIEW :

Whoever said that a toddler is a blender without a lid failed to relate this to a new mothers brain.

Being a new mother myself, there were a lot of things running in my mind. The baby, my toddler, my elderly parents and the covid pandemic that added itself to my ever piling up list of worries.

It was the right time that I grabbed Farah’s book which was exactly like she had a CCTV control room at her office.

A new mother is confused about her capabilities of mastering Breastfeeding, accepting her bodily functions post delivery, mental and sexual well-being yes that’s important too after delivery and adjusting herself to workplace post maternity.

Farah writes about postpartum care of the new mother. Most households have a similarity in the confinement period, belly binding ( you need not be in a hurry, but yes you could do it if you are comfortable and want to get back to pre pregnancy body ) .

The diet that the new mother is advised to what she can and what she has to avoid inorder to have a smoother transition.A set of general guidelines outlining the must be done and mustn’t be done. The meal should be simple, light, according to the mother’s taste and special foods that need to be mandatory in her meal. A lovely meal plan for new mothers charted by Farah is an easy guide for all new moms. The meal plan makes it easy for making prior preparation so that she doesn’t have to spend much time cooking.

Baby’s sickness and health is the four chapter where we get to know about various conditions pertaining to baby growth, brain development, colic, spit up and constipation. The doctor unapproved substances like Kajal, castor oil but are a must as per family traditions are very well explained on why being termed as unapproved.

Breastfeeding chapter discusses about the basic know how’s , preparation and must haves.A separate section about saboteurs and self doubters is something I really enjoyed reading and relate much. The field of lactation is been made aware only recently. We only knew about gynecologist and paediatricians. But the role of lactation consultant in between these two is known recently and is helping families from switching to formula and instead correct issues in breastfeeding. The appearance of bumps during breastfeeding, the causes and first aids to be followed are explained clearly so that you can conclude what you are suffering from.

A separate chapter on body image issues faced by women postpartum clearly explains why women look the way they are post delivery. A workout routine and eating right to keep metabolism levels up also helps new mothers to get back to their pre pregnancy weight.

PPD or postpartum depression would be the next word on Google suggestions if you type postpartum. Farah discusses about mood swings and ways to divert yourself.

The bedrooms after the baby, right from sleeping with the baby to getting back to sex life what you need to know is just waiting for you to read. All your doubts and inhibitions would be cleared very well once you read this book.

Just a like an extra wish, as a new mother, you could also offer your advice and care to couples who are planning for pregnancy during this time of #pandemic . Yes Farah has an exclusive epilogue just to address this.

At simple usage of words, mix of her personal and other real life experiences from patients, Farah makes this book a go to guide for every #newmother .

Review of we are pregnant

We are pregnant

BLURB

We are Pregnant” is a first of its kind pregnancy companion book with real-life anecdotes and expert inputs from doctors. In this book, Monalisa who is a mother herself has delved into various aspects of pregnancy based on her experiences, further enriched by those of other mums she has spoken to. She has talked about the ups and downs of the journey, emphasising on the fact that you are not alone in this. This book will help expecting mums and dads make sense of their pregnancy journey. We also hope along the way it also brings a smile on your face. The author has believes pregnancy is not an ordeal to be endured, rather it’s a journey to be enjoyed. Enjoy reading and we wish you a very happy, healthy and safe – pregnancy and childbirth.

MY REVIEW

A one of a kind book on pregnancy from Author Monalisa Bandyopadhyay. The book has everything about pregnancy from conceiving to cord blood banking.
Isn’t is nice when you have a one book guide that talks about the first test where you confirm pregnancy, the exact beginning of your wonderful journey ahead & going to cord blood banking that’s done after you deliver you baby.
The book answers a lot of questions that goes inside a pregnant woman’s mind. Googling it all up wouldn’t be a solution. The author in the first chapter says that choosing the doctor is the first step, because she would be your partner for every visit and for your final day when you deliver. Choosing someone whom you can trust, who talks freely is most important. She also says that just because you got your pregnancy confirmed by a doctor doesn’t mean you should continue with them. Choose the right one.
This book talks about the author’s pregnancy journey, events from her visits to Dr S and Dr.P whom she trusted most on the earth during her journey. The book has a Q & A section at the end of some chapter answered by doctors. Also some real life experiences of her friends who were willing enough to share their journey. I really loved the part where she has a section to  pen down our story as well.

The book also touches about informing the workplace, advice that starts pouring in, the doctor visits and the tests that follow. The ultrasound scans the prenatal classes are what you need to plan as well.
Weight gain and exercise is an integral part that needs to be discussed. Eat for two as they say is only the nutrients. The quality of the food matters than the quantity. Tips on what to and what not to eat also are listed which makes food planning easier.
A separate section on aches and pains starting from morning sickness, the heartburn, indigestion, varicose veins, swollen legs and how to deal with them .
Mood swings like I said is one of the parts of pregnancy journey that absolutely needs to be discussed openly. Especially with the better half. Look happy, be happy. So if it’s only from inside it would be shown outside.
The clothes, Skincare , makeup ,spa ,photo sessions every little thing is discussed in detail.
Child birth the day we have been waiting for , the day we had been preparing for, contractions and when exactly to start for the hospital, coping with pains. Reading this mentally prepared you for what you are about to experience.
Once the baby is out, the woman needs to recover, bond with baby, latching and pumping needs to be concentrated on. Breastfeeding DOS and don’ts , the changes the body undergoes are discussed.
The after delivery care for the woman and the baby, postnatal blues are some other topics discussed.
I really appreciate the author’s efforts to include not only her own experience but excerpts from other women too. I loved her writing style which was natural and how the way she actually felt was there in her words.

Review of I hate my curly hair

BLURB :

I tug till my head’s black and blue!
But nothing can tame
This wild, curly mane!

Curly haired girl does everything she can to straighten her stubborn curls-after all, everywhere she looks she sees heroines with smooth, silky hair. Then one day, a big bully comes along and everything changes! A humorous tale of self-acceptance. And of hair, lots and lots of glorious curly hair!

REVIEW :

Having read her first book dare eat that. This book is a complete contrast and is aimed at a different age group.

The author Divya aka ‘baal ki dukan’ had struggles with her unruly and very much curly hair. I’d definitely trade mine to have curly hair now.

This book is from the point of view of a four year old girl, who absolutely hates her curly twirly hair that coils and twists.

She feels it’s so unfair for someone to be blessed with curly thick hair that makes it unruly, frizzy and unmanageable.

Being called names like noodle, poodle this girl has tried everything she can to get those curls straight. From stretching it with books, glue, oil and what not the poor thing has tried to set right the unruly mane.

A sense of sadness surrounds her when she watches girls with long straight silky hair on TV and that’s something she doesn’t have.

Being bullied and laughed at for all her hair struggles, she tries hard not to cry.
But an incident changes her while thought and she starts feeling proud and happy to sport those lovely twirly whirly curls. Taking similarity to favourite heroes from books who are brave and adorn curly hair. She feels unique and is finally happy to have accepted herself as the curly haired girl and so does the bully friend.

The illustrations by @rujuta.td are brilliant and absolutely cute to look at.

A recent obsession of my daughter to grow long hair right after I narrated #rapunzel . She now wants curly hair post we finished reading this book.

A very fun and engaging read this book can reread as many times just to teach kids self acceptance and joy of reading.

Staying positive when you’re pregnant during Covid19 times

Staying positive when you’re pregnant

Pregnancy is a great period and one of the most looking forward moments in a woman’s life. Though there are a lot of stressful moments , the anxiety and happiness to welcome a new human being she created sure does bring in a lot of excitement.

Being pregnant in covid19 times

But coming to our current situation of the global pandemic #covid19 and the continuous lockdowns that are imposed I came to know that a lot of women went into stress and depression.

✔️Keep your mind open for changes happening around. With lockdown in place new rules are made every minute so don’t keep your mind rigid. Be open to changes.

Think happy be happy. St

✔️Stay calm and all this is just temporary and will be alright in a few days. The changes happening around are just for few days. Things would be back to normal in few days. Focus on your baby and keeping yourself stress free.

✔️Keep tracking baby growth with apps like @oviahealth @babycenter. Tracking baby growth is of utmost importance, the current situation shouldn’t hinder you from doing it in regular basis. Know your baby well. We now have a lot of applications on phone to help us with it.

✔️Make sure you don’t miss your doctor appointments or scans. Lockdown is not a reason to skip appointments or scans. Even if your hospital isn’t accepting patients, there are a lot of maternity speciality or childcare hospitals which are working in full swing to help pregnant women at this pandemic times.

✔️Don’t miss out on your walks or light workouts. The terrace or the car parking could be a great place to walk. A mild workout is necessary during this time. Most commonly people can opt for walking as it’s less strenuous and also aids good physical activity.

✔️Make meals that is favourite to you and your family. This is a great time to start experimenting new cuisines . With no time restrictions to pack lunches for kids and family, you’re at your ease to try out those new dishes , videos of which you had saved long back.

✔️ Set up a candle light dinner with your partner, while the toddler can spend time with grandparents. Who said you can’t go on date nights when you’re pregnant. Going out could be risky during this time but a good dinner at home cooked by both of you together sure does rekindle the spark and gets the libido working.

✔️ Pretend play a sleepover with your toddler. Toddlers are great mood changers. One smile from them or a tiny action sure does light up our minds. Especially if you take part in their pretend plays, it makes our mind relaxed and also makes them happy. You can also read about various activities to do along with them . Read on activities to do with toddlers to know more. The kids could also be a little out of routine, due to lockdown me staying home; which could make them cranky at times. Moreover the new arrival taking the attention would be playing a part in their mood swings. Speak to your partner on how you could handle it. You could also read along how to handle work and make time for them here.

✔️ Don’t get upset if things don’t go as you planned. It’s okay that sometimes things don’t go as per plan. Think of plan B. Divert yourself and don’t keep brooding about what didn’t happen. Just think there is a better way to handle right in front of you. Getting upset or depressed sure will affect your baby too.

✔️Divert yourself into something more interesting like sewing, crochet , doodling or listening to some peaceful music. Picking up a new hobby is always fun. But when you are doing something for the little one inside it doubles the joy and satisfaction.

✔️Devote time to reading good books that boost positivity. Parenting books provide great knowledge at this time. You could also read about how to handle your labor in a relaxed manner. There a lot of books that help how to lead a happy life like IKIGAI.

✔️Talk to your baby in the womb. That is much more comforting. Babies start responding to the mothers voice sooner. It could be in the form of kicks. Start talking to him/her , trust me this will have greater benefits once they’re out.

✔️Self care is much needed and you don’t get better time to do it than to maintain and enhance that pregnancy glow. Get all the scrubs and face masks that are hiding in your closet and waiting to be used. Get going girl,it’s time to bring out that glow. I had a lot of time to try out products and my most favourite and a great recommendation for Ayurvedic products are here. You could take a look and invest , I’m sure you won’t regret buying.

✔️ Maintain a pregnancy journal of start writing posts on to a blog. Document what you feel. If you’re well informed of health sciences during pregnancy you could write on that. This would help fellow women who are pregnant. If you need help on how to start a blog you can read on. How to start a blog.

✔️Most importantly step out for some fresh air and breathe. Fresh air is all we need to keep our mind relaxed it also helps you in bringing in a lot of positivity.

On another note I came across a wonderful technique that my friend had shared, an idea about a gratitude bubble and being grateful and thankful at the end of day for things that we would like to make a note. Do read about it here. I’m sure this would be a great way for positivity too.

The points that are documented above are based on my experience as a pregnant mom during #covid19. I know that many of you or people whom you may know might feel the same. Do share this with them and make them stay positive. We can get through this sooner.

A book of 200+ pages that tells you about his struggles and how he handled them to reap success. His entrepreneural skill began when he bargained the chess board at a roadside shop. What was priced at 500 by the shopkeeper was well bargained eby Jason for 30 rupees. What actually surprised me was he stood by it backed by his father. That showed good negotiation skills at a very young age. He took up favourite animation company Valiant by raising funds and saving it from fallback.
He mastered the art of bringing to success Businesses which were sinking. To name a few were Housing.com , Snapdeal and freecharge. It wasn’t an easy path, he had to make tough calls of laying off and raising money to make profit.

Writing style
The author makes the narration very simple and easy to comprvarious events were he turns companies successfull are nowhere given way to lengthy to drag. No complex narrations, so makes it easy for younger minds to grasp what the author has to say.

What I liked

Describing the events were mind-blowing especially the Agra chessboard from roadside vendor wherehis journey began deserves a special mention. Loved the narration that was different for the initial life of author and how it changed for later parts. The book cannot be classified under one genre owing to the book mentioning about both his professional and personal life. Few of the one liners were great and can be taken for not only people who wish to be entrepreneur but also for our normal lives.

”Captain a rowboat before a ship; a ship before a fleet.’

What could have been better

The author could have gone much more in detail.about the tactics or the formulas he used to bring up the companies. Young aspiring minds would need to know about those details to get a clearer vision.

#BlogchatterA2Z D what to and what not to teach

We’re into the fourth alphabet D for which is like to mention qualities like dedicated, dependable, determined, decisive, delightful and a dreamer to be taught and practiced.

What to teach

Dedicated – Being dedicated would mean complete involvement in an action. To succeed in any task the first and foremost thing would be the dedication. The willingness that comes from within to spend the time and energy into something is what is termed dedication.

Dependable – Being dependable is being a person on whom we can be sure of or be confident of. This makes you a person on whom we could count on or rely upon. That level of confidence that forms a personality trait is being dependable.

Determined – Being determined is having a strong feeling to complete or succeed in a task. It is a feeling that will not allow anyone or anything to stop you from doing it. The firmness in resolution gives you that drive towards completion.

Decisive – Being decisive would mean the ability to decide and come to a conclusion. It is based on this trait you continue to accomplish the plan to proceed with the task. It doesn’t mean that you decide things in a hurry. It means you have enough knowledge on what you decide to proceed further on.

Delightful – This would mean becoming a liking for all. A character that would be loved and greatly appreciated and look forward to. It is that when someone describes you as delightful it means you bring in happiness or joy to the surroundings.

Dreamer – Being a dreamer would deem you a person who always imagines things you would like to happen but is impractical. But in my point of view if your aren’t a dreamer, you wouldn’t be a doer. It is dreams that often give you suggestions or solutions to existing problems in life.

What not to teach

Deceptive – Being deceptive would mean giving a false impression. You would not want your kid to be a person who makes you believe that something that is not true. You see them building up excuses for their mistake however believable that might be, cut it out right away.

Dishonest – As we know this is a characteristic of a person who cannot be trusted. We obviously do not want our kids to be this way. Make them act fair right from the beginning.

Domineering – Domineering would mean gain control of the situation in an inappropriate way. People with this characteristic try to thrust what they decide without having empathy. They feel they decide everything and that’s the end of it.

Despondent– Being despondent is having a low feeling or losing hope . It’s something like losing confidence or getting into depression.

That’s it with D and see you next week for fresh start with what you should be teaching in E and what not to . Until then have a great weekend.
