Review of let’s do this together #myfriendalexa

BLURB

How much? How many? How far? How small?

Maths helps make sense of the world around us. How many mangoes are needed to make a jar of pickle? How many toes do the monsters under the bed have? How many days till the new moon?

Let’s Do This Together is filled with stories that cleverly weave everyday maths problems into the narrative so children can easily solve them with the help of a parent, teacher or friend.

As they start with sums that are easy-peasy, move to mostly easy and then to ones that are not that easy, the book helps them build their self-confidence and number proficiency.

REVIEW

Maths is definitely not an easy subject especially for those who have a fear when they hear the name.
Born into a family or mathematical geniuses, I was not very comfortable with maths. The fact that everyone else is much better on this gave me a fear that was throughout my education period.
This book ‘ let’s do this together’ by lubaina.bandukwala and vineetakano looks really fun and engaging for kids to solve math problems.
The questions how many ? How much? How far ? Have a lot of meaning when it comes to math.
Right from counting the number of pista shells, to number of days that new moon the book makes learning more interesting.
When guided by a parent or the teacher the book is a great way to make kids understand the mathematics concepts.
Easy least, mostly easy and not that easy the three sections divide the book into three sections that deal with problems according to the complexity.
With simple narration and day to day examples I just loved the way the author has written the book.
Recommended for 5+ this book is a must buy for kids to start loving maths.

Ginormous Jo’s You Are Special

Written & Illustrated
by S C Cunningham

Ever wish you could ask someone the big life questions?

Tom and Vincent have a full list for their friend, Ginormous Jo. Being in a unique family of three dogs and a kitten, they are all the best of friends. Tom, a little white dog and Vincent, a small kitten, play quietly in the backyard until they start asking questions about life. Are they special? Why do they feel they don’t fit in?

They come up with a list to ask Ginormous Jo, the friendly senior dog in the house. She takes the two to heart and listens to their questions. The answers might be astonishing to the pair, but they are an excellent example of how you can learn from those wiser than yourself. But the important thing, of course, is they asked for help from an elder. She teaches them how they are already special. And that through recycling, they can help save the whole world!

This darling little picture book continues the Ginormous Jo serious stressing the importance of asking questions and being honest with your elders. It helps model how children should feel free to express their feelings to loved ones older than them, and follow the advice. It stresses how anyone can be special by their personal effort to better the world. This is a great book for any children’s library especially as a gift from a grandparent or older sibling.

REVIEW

This book brings out the message about how to feel special about oneself. Self love is important to make others realise how special you are. It is also important to know how special you are and how honest you could be with one another by asking questions.

Here in this book Vinnie and Tom have questions lined up for JOe and seek her answers. Her answers not only satisfy yom and Vinnie, but also open up a different perspective of thinking for us.

Ginormous Joe’s Broken Bark

by S C Cunningham
Illustrations by Scarlett Raven & S C Cunningham

Can a dog be saved by the love of a family?

Can he find his bark to save them from the local thief?

Meet Joe. He’s got the worst owner that dumps him by the road where he is found by the Tuttle family. They take him in, even though he has no bark at all. But he is a very large dog which should help protect the family from the recent break-ins around the neighborhood. But Joe loves to sleep. He stretches out and snores loud, barking while he dreams of chasing rabbits. He just can’t bark while he is awake
.
Will he save the family when a burglar enters the house? Will Joe find his bark to warn them in time?
This delightful story is the first of a series of stories featuring Ginormous Joe. It shows how he becomes part of the Tuttle family. It’s a great read-aloud for families that have recently got a dog and teaches a lesson on how everyone has a purpose.

REVIEW

It’s always great to have a dog as a pet. The amount of love they show on you, the care they take , the little tail wagging as a sign of gratitude all that makes your heart chirpy.

One such story here in this book is that Joe here is a cute , white fluffy dog. Initially with nasty Nik, who doesn’t care a bit for the dog eventhough how much love the dog shows on him. One fine day Nasty Nik drops him off on the highway. Joe unable to react due to the shock. He loses his bark. Nasty Nik mocks at this and leaves.

Joe is devastated and goes on without food water and struggles which is when the Tuttle family finds him and decide to keep him

Joe is best friends with Mary, the little girl but they do not feel bad that he cannot bark. Mrs Tuttle is happy that Joe will be a good watch dog eventhough he doesn’t bark. Will he save the day ? What happens ?

A lovely tale for the little ones. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I’m sure the little kids will also do.

Ginormous Joe’s Annoying Friend

Written & Illustrated
by S C Cunningham

Do you have a child that has trouble talking to people? Or expressing their feelings?

Here is a story about dogs with the problem of communicating their feelings, and how they solve it together. The Tuttles enjoy walking their dog, Ginormous Joe. But one day, they bring home a new friend, another dog named Mo. Joe and Mo don’t seem to hit it off. She is always ignoring him and not wanting to play. One day, Joe realizes that all he needed to do was reach out and talk. This gave Mo a chance to tell him why she never would play with him. She was shy. The awkwardness between them evaporates, and they become friends, all from finally being brave enough to tell each other their feelings.

This is a great book to show children how to communicate to solve their problems and work through their feelings. It will make a great addition to any child’s home collection or teacher’s read-aloud library.

MY REVIEW :

A good book that shows importance of communication, eventhough if it’s between dogs. Communication plays key role in conveying emotions at the right time.

Joe is the sole owner of all the love at Tuttle’s home. But when aunt decides to go away on a trip, Mo makes her entry which makes Joe sad that he has competition.

Mo tries to impress him in every possible way, but to Joe it appears as interference. So he wishes that she goes away sooner.

But he soon changes his mind and wishes for her to comeback sooner. What incident made him think that way ? Read on…

I loved the illustrations and brief narration which was easy to comprehend.

Review of Dear people, with love and care your doctors #myfriendalexa

BLURB

From time immemorial, medicine has remained one of the most respected professions. Trust formed the unshakeable foundation of the doctor-patient relationship and, for long, doctors were treated next to God.
In recent times, though, this sacred relationship is suffering from an erosion of faith. We often hear discouraging stories of doctors being abused and hospitals vandalised. The narrative is gradually turning negative-a dismal reality for both doctors and patients. We tend to forget that there are many great things happening in the medical world. Today, we are living much longer, we have managed to eradicate many diseases, we have vaccines that prevent our children from dying, life-saving surgeries are being performed while the baby is still in the womb, and we can give the gift of life to someone by transplanting vital organs. Medical miracles are happening every day in hospitals worldwide.

This book is a collection of heartfelt stories by doctors and patients from across the globe. These are stories of triumph, empathy, positivity, loss and, sometimes, failure. It goes one step ahead and captures the experience of people who surround a doctor-the mother of a doctor, a surgeon’s husband and an acid attack survivor-stories that underline that a doctor too is a human being after all. Human resilience can often break barriers, and these stories serve as inspiration to both patients and doctors alike.

Riveting and absolutely unputdownable, Dear Peoplegives an inside view of the world of medicine and hopes to inspire millions to retain faith in this beautiful relationship.

MY REVIEW

📝They say we should never hide things from the doctor and lawyer. A gentle caring relationship is the one between a doctor and a patient. It is only when we open up, the doctor gets the know the complete issue and can help us heal better.
📝A book that gives you a complete picture of what is the day to day life of doctors and view of the scenario from a patient’s point of view. The book will definitely change the way we look at the medical profession.
📝The number of experiences compiled into a single book gives you a clear picture of how each case is handled by the doctors. Some give you the glimpse of struggle, some about new discovery and some about hope.
📝A number of medical terms could be learned from reading through each chapter. The lovely drawings that also give you a glimpse from the patient view.
📝A number of quotes at the beginning of each chapter makes it even interesting. Not only that in order to increase the knowledge of the reader we even have a section that gives you a did you know?
📝A compilation of 34 distinct stories from doctors of different fields of medicine, this is sure to change your perspective of the doctors.
📝The narration and language are lucid and simple making it easy to comprehend. A good book that gives you a whole new perspective of doctors and some experiences that sure would leave you emotional.

Review of sometimes it happens #myfriendalexa

BLURB

What happens when two adults with a vast age difference fall in love?
Gautam is a twenty-five-year-old upcoming professional and Roshni, a senior management member working in the same multinational bank. More than a decade apart in age, they cannot help but feel attracted towards each other.
However, can two people with such a vast age difference be compatible?
Sometimes It Happens explores the fun and turmoil as they fall in love, get laughed at by their friends and then develop cold feet, thinking about the repercussions their age difference could have on their relationship.
They say love is blind. So, will two smart professionals decide to listen to their hearts or will they listen to their mind to avert what may be the biggest blunder of their lives?

MY REVIEW

We know that love is blind. The whole wide world we live in revolves around it. We also know that it is beyond defining boundaries.
The boundary could be religion, region, caste, creed , nationality or whatsoever. But this is an era where we have seen instances of even age and gender not being a subject of doubt.
This story is about a guy(Gautam) ,who falls in love with Roshni of 37 years.
Gautam informs Rohit about this, who explains reality of what would happen because of the age difference, which doesn’t convince him.
Though both are in love they still do have their doubts about acceptance of their relationship by parents.
What would the society be reacting for such kind of situations? Will they be accepted ? What are the challenges they face are clearly explained? I loved the way of writing and narration from the author.
I realised this is a good filmy scripting material.
A good plot that makes people look into the perspective of being open minded about these kind of relationships.
Book bring medium paced and with an interesting story line is a short read. However I felt that the cover could have been better.

Review of Twenty three : Collection of short stories by Bikramjit Sen #myfriendalexa

twenty three: collection of short stories

BLURB:

Everyone has a story to tell or a story that deserves to be told. Since no person is the same, everyone’s life is a unique tale. This uniqueness of different lives is honoured by Twenty Three: Collection of Short Stories that narrates the lives of various people. Twenty Three tells all kinds of stories, ranging from stories of ordinary people to those of paranormal entities. So, step into different dimensions as you flip through the various stories of Twenty Three.

MY REVIEW:

Well the book is a collection of 23 short stories just as the title says. Each portraying a different human emotion. The authors thoughts before each chapter is something that would not be liked by all. Since at places it seems like it takes too much importance drifting away the focus.

While some stories are exception, some led to a drag to the pace that was already set by the previous chapters. The book speaks about death, re-incarnation, psychology, spirituality. This shows the author’s interests on the topics.

Some of the emotions portrayed are those which are neglected by us. The author should be applauded for making each emotion a center of focus in each chapter.

Outer, Heated, the legendary tale of Jatayu are few chapters I personally liked.

The characterization was very well maintained throughout each chapter. The narration was excellent and played a pivotal role making the book a definite page turner.

A commendable job on the cover design which is a portrayal of colors depicting emotions surrounding the human life.

The editing was perfect; amongst the recent books I’ve read.

Motherhood Mantra that keeps me going #myfriendalexa

“I am a good Mother; I do my best as a Mother.

Each day I am getting better, life can’t get any better.”

Mom and daughter

This is my mantra these days. I keep saying this to myself. No, I am not under any pressure or depressed.

Repeating this gives me a boost; a sense of accomplishment and gives me a push to go that extra mile and do whatever it takes to keep my daughter happy.

A great start for the day is a lovable hug when she’s up. Though I am up early, (okay let’s say just a couple of minutes or rarely hours), before her, that wait for her hug is so special.

When there are so many things running in your mind and your running here and there, that monosyllable “MAA” from her makes me forget everything.

Mom and daughter

Though I get angry with things lying around, after she’s left at my mom’s place in the morning I do enjoy replaying stuff in my mind- the tiny blocks or alphabet chunks lying around, the vessels and Tupperware boxes misplaced, that cute teddy inside my coffee filter. All these make me forget that this is part of a household chore that I am doing.

Those teeny tiny hands mixing an empty bowl with spoon and feeding you, pulling your hair is all instances that need to linger around in mind always.

Even if you try concentrating hard at work, a corner of your mind just keeps thinking that she is okay. Those blank phone calls or the beep beep sounds from the keypad when you call her is all a bliss.

When you reach home and you know she is there waiting for you, and watch her eyes glow in excitement on seeing you makes you the happiest person in the word.

Listening to her stories of what she did throughout the day (okay technically not stories) I mean even if it is gibberish, it’s good to hear.

Cuddling her, getting her dressed to bed, making her sleep and falling asleep with her is indeed the best way to end my day. And so the next day starts, yes with the same mantra.

I am a good Mother; I do my best as a Mother.

Each day I am getting better, life can’t get any better.”

Letter to my dear husband #myfriendalexa

Today is a very special day in our life. It’s your 30th birthday, my better half. Though we’ve only been married three years, you know it gives me a feeling like we’ve shared a lifetime of experiences.

We have been blessed to have an awesome life, to travel for our love of adventure, to stand with each other through thick and thin, to support each other through job losses and new ventures, to constant encouragement and uplifting of each other. Having you as my partner-in-crime is something I thank God for every day.

I spent so many days thinking about what I should be doing for you to make this birthday amazing and to figure out what to get the man who gives me everything. Nothing was as earnest as me wishing you a happy day, not just today, but every day. It’s simple, your contentment and satisfaction is mine.

Gifts are just one way to show love. But frankly saying, it can never compare to the gift you’ve already given me: a life with you and a life from you(Cheeni). The memories we made together after we met and just the opportunity to walk side by side through all our adventures. I couldn’t have chosen a better person and I am so thankful that God chose you to be mine. You’re the best gift I’ve ever been given

It feels kind of amazing to know, how a once stranger person can now mean the whole world to you? The best part is when you become so close to him, that you begin to say the same things, steal lines from each other, and have an analogous sense of humor or a hidden joke just by exchange of glances because you have such a strong connection with them. That’s what I got lucky and found in you.

You made me learn a lot of things, being independent is just one of them. You came around and changed everything. You enforced me to grow up as an individual and learn to look at all the angles. I would say that our relationship is far from perfect. We’re still learning and growing as individuals while getting over past mistakes. We’re learning to trust each other, while continuing to build our relationship.

Words can never describe how lucky I am to have you in my life and especially to be by my side, you are my font of my happiness and we have made so many incredible memories.

I keep looking at our photos, because even behind those okayish photos of me, we have some utterly beautiful memories. I have never met a kinder, more generous, intelligent, maddening, loving and honest person in my life.

You are kid at heart especially with the sense of humor and mockery and that is something that makes me fall in love with you all over again.

Honestly saying I wouldn’t be here without you, you are my absolute rock. You always inspire me to be a better person, to never stop achieving, to keep going, to forgive and to enjoy the present.

Today I am thankful for your parents and to those who brought you up and for those who came before that I never even knew.

Thank you for putting up with me when I’m cranky and tired. Thank you for knowing when I need to take a break. Thank you for always being game for something new, no matter how silly it seems Thank you for motivating me when I want to desperately give up. Thank you for encouraging me to be me.

Today I am thankful to be your wife. I’m thankful that you chose me, and that you continue to choose me daily, despite my imperfections and annoying habits.

Thank you for the most amazing 3 years. I love you more than words can ever say and even when I get super cranky with you, but you are the other half of me, and you complete my life.

We have so many fun adventures to look back on already and I know we have so many amazing adventures ahead of us. Happy 30th birthday my love, I am so gratified to be your wife! I am blessed by you every single day. May this year be full of God’s healing and favor in your life. I love you!
